What causes vaginal dryness in ladies? Vaginal dryness is a common problem and generally faced after menopause. It is often not a serious problem but negatively impacts one’s sexual life.
However, it’s very important to understand some easy science before talking about the remedies to treat vaginal dryness.
The walls of the vagina remain lubricated normally because of the glands. These glands keep the vagina supple and moist. This moisture is slightly acidic in nature which keeps the vaginal area healthy and safe from infections. Vaginal dryness is a result of this reduction in moisture. It is a result of decreased levels of oestrogen.
As a matter of fact, vaginal dryness is not a concern for some women but for others it may have an effect on sexual lives by causing pain and discomfort during intercourse.
It can also increase the chances of infection. There are easy solutions available for this problem but let’s first glance at the causes.
What Causes Vaginal Dryness In Ladies?
A Drop in Oestrogen Levels: Mostly vaginal dryness is because of a drop in the level of oestrogen (Oestrogen is the primary female sex hormone, also found in male too.
It is responsible for the development and regulation of the female reproductive system and secondary sex characteristics).
These levels drop during or when menopause is about to approach. When oestrogen decline, the vagina becomes thinner, less elastic and drier.
These changes are known as Vaginal Atrophy.
Sjögren’s Syndrome: This syndrome involves inflammation of salivary and tear glands. The tissues lining the vagina can also become inflamed which leads to dryness.
Antihistamines: These drugs are used for treating cold and allergies, however, their side-effects can be vaginal dryness and trouble while urinating.
Antidepressants: Some antidepressants can have harmful effects on our sexual lives. It can make orgasm difficult, reduce libido and cause vaginal dryness.
Menopause: Generally, oestrogen levels usually drop due to menopause and therefore is one of main causes of vaginal dryness.
Some other causes are not enough foreplay before sex, douching, breastfeeding, contraceptive pills among others.
What causes vaginal dryness in ladies? ARE THERE REMEDIES FOR VAGINAL DRYNESS?
Regular Sex: An active sexual life is one of the solutions to vaginal dryness. Blood flow to the vaginal tissues increases when a woman is aroused and this helps create moisture.
Having enough foreplay and arousal before intercourse will also reduce dryness and make sex more pleasurable.
Using Cotton Underwears: Synthetic underwears can be clingy and lead to more irritation in the vagina and restricted flow of air. Cotton underwears provide enough air to the vagina.
Foods with Phytoestrogens: Tofu, Nuts, Seeds; These are compounds that are similar in function to oestrogens.
Foods that are high in phytoestrogens include soy, nuts, seeds, tofu, among others. Researches have said that phytoestrogens help in improving vaginal dryness and hot flashes.
Avoid Using Perfumed Soaps/ Hygiene Products: Around the vaginal area, unperfumed soaps should be used to avoid dryness.
Also, hygiene products contain dyes and fragrances which can dry out vaginal tissues. Vagina has the property of self-cleaning and therefore there is no need of applying fragrant soaps.
WHEN TO VISIT A DOCTOR
If in spite of these solutions the problems persist, visit a DOCTOR. Also in case of bleeding, severe pain during intercourse, excess discharge, consulting a DOCTOR is advisable.
Also, remember that vaginal dryness is faced by almost half of the number of women after menopause but it needs to be addressed.
Mild symptoms can be treated by using vaginal moisturisers and lubricants during intercourse. However, smoking decreases oestrogen levels so this gives you another reason to quit smoking.
