It’s very important we make this yuletide season a reasonably healthy season. The way to go is to ensure that we take measures to maintain our health. To begin with, we may put on weight because of salt, sugar or oil – common ingredients in the festive food. Eating after a long gap, which is quite the possibility as we stay busy in the festivities, can also lead to overeating and hence, weight gain. So should you drop the plans to party this festive season? Of course not. However, below are some ideas and tips on how one can party and still maintain good weight.
CUT DOWN ON SALT: Do not take dips, chutneys or dressing with snacks. It helps to cut down on extra salt which can cause weight gain or puffiness on face the next morning. In case you do, start your day with coconut water or fenugreek water (methi water) or 1 bowl of pomegranate. These foods act as a natural diuretic and help to reduce water retention immediately. You must also avoid salted dry fruits, soups, sausages, salami etc for the same reason. Remember water cuts water hence have a lot of water post-party (after party).
KEEP SUGAR UNDER CONTROL: Best way to fight sugar cravings is to have water. Staying hungry for long hours can lead to sugar cravings and cause binge eating. Mocktails and cocktails can pile up sugar in our body, leading to a spike in blood sugar. Try to stick to natural drinks like coconut water, lemonade or wheat beer. Diluting a very sweet drink can also reduce your calorie intake.
CUT BACK ON OILY FOOD: Oil is a major source of calories in our food. Avoid heavy gravies, dishes with mayonnaise, cheese etc. Roasted or grilled snacks are a good choice. If you do eat foods that are high in fat content, you should have half a glass of water with lemon during or after your meal. You can also add a side salad to make the dish healthier.
SNACK BEFORE THE PARTY: Parties kick off very late because of which one overeats snacks. You must have a healthy snack like a cucumber sandwich or a big bowl of salad or fruit before you leave for the party to ensure you do not overeat.
WATER: Water is extremely important for everyone’s body. Water will hydrate you if you have had too much alcohol. It will help flush out extra salt if you have had salty food. Water can also help you feel satiated and keep hunger pangs away.
EXERCISE: Do not forget to exercise on a daily basis. If you skipped your cardio session or gym, dancing is a good workout, especially if you are going to a party.
