According to the American Heart Association’s 2016 stroke rehab guidelines, stroke patients should be treated at an in-patient rehabilitation facility rather than a skilled nursing facility whenever possible. In-patient facilities enable patients to participate in at least three hours of rehabilitation a day ranging from physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists with nurses and doctors always on hand to help.
However, it’s important to note that stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability and the fifth-leading cause of death in the US alone. Nevertheless, below are few tips to help reduce such statistics:
Eat healthy to maintain a healthy weight
Exercise regularly with doctor’s approval
Keep diabetes blood sugar levels in check
Limit alcohol consumption
Maintain a healthy blood pressure
Stop smoking
Treat high cholesterol
Always visit your physician for more information and advice
