Is OFE AKWU healthy? Ofe Akwu, also known as Banga soup, is a popular Igbo, Delta or Urhobo (a tribe in Southern Nigeria) soup. But today, due to the search for healthy meal, this very soup is not only popular among the Igbos or Deltans but across many regions in Nigeria including some Northern part as well.

The soup is made from palm fruit juice which are extracted through pounding the nuts with mortal and pestle.

The soup, OFE AKWU, is made by cooking palm fruit concentrate (juice) with ingredients such as meat, fish, stockfish, and traditional spices.

The soup is often used to sauce Akpu or Fufu, Pounded yam, Tuwon, Semo, Garri, and even rice.

However, it’s important to know (like earlier said) that palm fruit, which is also known as Banga is used in making Banga Soup, and it remains one of Nigeria’s most common food products.

In fact, not just the fruit but all parts of the plant are useful in one way or the other and Palm oil is of course the most visible and commercial product of the Banga (palm) tree.

Palm oil which is gotten from the flesh of palm (Banga) fruit is used to prepare a popular delicacy called Ofe Akwu or Banga soup.

Although is commonly called Ofe Akwu in Igboland, it can also be called different names by different ethnic groups especially here in Nigeria. For example: The West/Yoruba call it Obe Eyin,

Itsekiri call it Obey Ekpo, the Balyesans named it Lii Fulou or Luu Fiai and the Akwa –Ibom/Cross River call It Efere Abak/Atama.

In addition, our neighboring countries like Cameroon referred it to as Mbanga soup while Ghanaians named it Abenkwan. In fact Ofe Akwu is one of the West African best cuisines.

Is OFE AKWU Healthy? The Ingredients Needed

– Palm kernel nuts

– Onions

-Stockfish (Okporoko)

– Yellow pepper

– Seasoning (seasoning cubes)

– Beef meat/ goat/fish

– Periwinkle

– Snail (Eju)

– Stick of Oburunbebe

Is OFE AKWU Healthy? Method Of Preparation

  1. Boil palm kernel nuts for 25 minutes
  2. Check the palm kernel if it soft, pour out the water and extract the oil by pounding the nuts with mortar and pestle. After then add some water to it, stir it and leaves it for some minutes
  3. Pour the extracted content into a pot and boil for 30 minutes
  4. Pound the pepper, tyko, rogojie, sprinkle few leaves of obeletientien. Add all to the soup, pinch of native salt and seasoning cubes.
  5. Break the oburun-bebe stick into two and drop half of the stick in the soup, these spices give it a great aroma and taste.Add boiled meat (assorted, Pomo, snail, periwinkle and boil for about 10 minutes.
  6. At this point, the soup becomes thick. Then remove the oburunbebe ( brown stick) Keep it for another use.
  7. The soup can be served with starch, Fufu or Eba.

The soup is best preserved by warming it in native pot. Inability to get all the species it can be cooked ordinarily with stockfish, snails.
