Happiness Is The Key To Wellness: Is Laughter Medicinal?

Is laughter medicinal? We all enjoy a good laugh but beyond the fun in laughing, there are many health benefit associated with it.

Various studies have shown that laughter can decrease blood pressure, relieve pain and stress, and engender a stronger immune system. Yes!

Laughter can actually improve the body’s immune system. How? Whenever you laugh, some molecules are released in the brain and these molecules are designed to fight stress and diseases in the body.

Also, endorphins, a natural body chemical that makes us feel good, are released into the body when we laugh.

When this very chemical is released into your body, you will experience a sense of well-being and it can even make you temporarily forget any pain you might be having at the moment.

Laughter can help your blood vessels function properly, thereby increasing blood flow. An improved blood flow implies that your heart is well protected from heart attack and other cardiovascular issues.

Another amazing thing about laughter is that it can help you burn some calories. Although laughter can and should never take place of exercise, a study has shown that when you laugh for 10-15 minutes a day you might burn about 40 calories which could translate to losing 3 or 4 pounds in a year.

Laughter can also improve your mental health. It dowses anger, bitterness and resentment. It lightens your mood, fosters joy and liveliness, eases anxiety and strengthens resilience.

These will, of course, strengthen your relationship with people, enhance teamwork and attract people to you. A research was conducted in Norway and it was discovered that “people with strong sense of humour outlived those who doesn’t laugh as much.

The difference was particularly notable for those battling with cancer.” It doesn’t cost you anything to laugh, laughter is cheap and it is a potent medicine for us all.
