Not all sugars need to be avoided. Naturally occurring sugars in whole fruit (fructose) and plain milk and yogurt (lactose) come packaged with vitamins, minerals and, in the case of fruit, fibre and antioxidants.
Added and free sugars are the ones to limit. Consuming them in excess is tied to a greater risk of weight gain, obesity, heart disease, Type-2 diabetes and dental caries.
Added sugars are used by the food industry and at home to add a sweet taste to foods, or to perform other roles such as thickening, texturizing or browning.
They go by many different names including brown sugar, cane syrup, honey, brown rice syrup, maltose, dextrose and glucose-fructose, etc.
“Free” sugars, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), are added sugars as well as sugars naturally present in fruit juice and fruit juice concentrates.
Once removed from whole fruit, these sugars are free to be added to foods for sweetening purposes.
However, in some beverages or soft drinks, they are been labeled as zero sugar because people are now conscious about what goes into their bodies nowadays. But is zero sugar means no sugar?

Key facts about Aspartame And Acesulfame-K (Acesulfame-K)
Aspartame: Dozens of studies have linked aspartame, the world’s most widely used artificial sweetener, to serious health problems, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, seizures, stroke and dementia, as well as negative effects such as intestinal dysbiosis, mood disorders, headaches and migraines.
Evidence also links aspartame to weight gain, increased appetite and obesity-related diseases.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Aspartame is “safe for the general population under certain conditions.”
Acesulfame-K: One of the major issues surrounding Ace-K is that it contains the carcinogen methylene chloride. According to studies, headaches, depression, nausea, mental confusion, liver effects, kidney effects, visual disturbances, and cancer can all result from long-term exposure to methylene chloride.
Ace-K reportedly can disrupt metabolic processes and interfere with appetite regulation, blood sugar control, and body weight.
Additionally, studies have shown that Ace-K can affect the early development of babies during pregnancy. Studies also show that a high daily intake of artificially sweetened drinks can cause premature births.
Through several studies researchers have determined that there is a link between the consumption of drinks with Ace-K and the development of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.
Test tube studieshave shown that Ace-K has been confirmed to increase the amount of sugar absorbed by cells from the gut.
